5 Genuine Baby Horseshoe Crab, Chesapeake Blue Crab Shells, Natural Molt. Condition is "New". Shipped with USPS First Class.
During the late spring and early summer, adult horseshoe crabs travel from deep ocean waters to beaches along the East and Gulf coasts to breed.
The molting process requires shedding small exoskeletons in exchange for larger shells. Horseshoe crabs go through 16 or 17 molts during their development. At around 10 years of age, horseshoe crabs reach adulthood. They are ready to start breeding and will migrate to coastal beaches in the spring. A horseshoe crab can live for more than 20 years.
Our shells are collected as they wash up on shore after molting. They are copiously rinsed in fresh running water and left out in the sun until they dry.
These tiniest little specimens are sometimes paper-thin and an absolute marvel to hold and observe. These little guys still have their legs and would make a great school specimen.
Our baby Maryland blue crab shell is as light as a feather. These very tiny guys are very hard to find fully intact. Our specimen has lost a tiny piece of its front left shell. We have only collected four this summer so this is a rare find.
We photographed each individual shell top and bottom along with its measurement.
Carefully shipped in strong cardboard box. Please be careful unwrapping of these guys as they are fragile. Photos are actual shells being sold.
Would make a beautiful beach Decor display.
